Process Engineer – Fiber Optic Cable

Hitachi Cable Manchester is seeking a technically savvy; solutions orientated hands-on Fiber Optic Process Engineer to join our engineering team, focusing on the development of new fiber cable products and assembly applications, with an emphasis on continuous process improvement.

Position Summary: This position is an integral member of our engineering team working with a focus on the development of new fiber cable products and assembly applications. This role is accountable for delivering tangible results in tandem with the business plan objectives by supporting new product industrialization, improving capacity utilization, and managing continuous improvement efforts.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Develop, test, and prepares for market, highly engineered, high margin specialty fiber optic cables and products for demanding applications
  • Setup, configure and operate test setups, fixtures, and instrumentation as required by test plans
  • Design test fixtures as required per customer specifications, test plans, and test standards and customer instructions
  • Works on projects from concept to completion
  • Provide technical support to global locations
  • Evaluate technical engineering issues which are brought to HCM for analysis, and recommends solutions, utilizing both analytical and hands-on approaches for evaluation
  • Acts as a liaison to management, aspire to be an in-house expert. Will meet with externally with customer, vendors, etc.
  • Ensure the accuracy and consistency of data results utilizing thorough documentation processes, validate cable design and test methods
  • Operate a variety of computer automated and manual test equipment including fiber optic data acquisition systems, environmental chambers, vibration systems, and assorted measurement transducers
  • Contracting, scheduling, and supervising tests in-house and with sub-contracting facilities
  • Sourcing, obtaining quotations, and selecting manufacturing equipment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to conduct negotiations and handle conflict. Sense of urgency in meeting deadlines Working in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team environment Familiarity with data acquisition systems, data analysis and processing Understands and is familiar with ISO process and procedures and lean manufacturing principles kaizen, 5S, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering discipline, BSEE, BSME, Optics preferred
  • 5+ years of related work experience in wire and cable manufacturing environment
  • Track record of driving improvements with quality results
  • Advanced computer literacy and knowledge of standard business software products (Microsoft Office, Outlook, CRM, etc.)
  • Ongoing commitment to advance knowledge in the field of fiber optics, testing, and standards

Physical Demands:

  • Finger dexterity and hand/eye coordination for operation of office equipment, including PC
  • Sitting for periods of time, working at a desk in office environment
  • Light lifting carrying of files, supplies, ability to move, or lift up to 30 lbs. of objects and/or materials
  • Ability to speak and hear customers, vendors, and or other employees via phone or in person
  • Body motor skills sufficient to move for one office location to another throughout plant
  • Periodic ability to travel by car, plane, train, etc.
